Silkworm
Researchers in the U.S. have developed genetically modified worms produce silk extraordinarily strong, similar to the strength of steel and is considered one of the best inventions of the year.
Scientists at the University of Wyoming, seeking to obtain silk with the same strength as the substance produced by spiders, which in proportion to its weight, it is stronger than steel.
Professor Don Jarvis, University of Wyoming, has managed to generate a material between typical silk worms and the cobwebs, so abundant and also has different mechanical properties.
The new substance could be used in medical implants and sutures to create stronger. It could also be a greener substitute for certain types of plastics.
Some critics expressed concern about creating GM worms and the possibility that somehow end up coming out of the lab with unforeseen consequences.
Professor Poppy believes, however, that these worms do not pose an environmental threat and that the potential benefits outweigh any risks.
